Ubuntu Touch Over The Update OTA-9 OS and app updates roll in |
Over the last week, The UBports Foundation rolled out the latest Over The Air (OTA) update to the Ubuntu Touch OS, now at OTA-9.
I decided to upgrade from the OTA-7 on my Nexus 5 testbed to examine the changes in design and functionality of some of the core applications, user interfaces and overall user experience, and continue my deep dive from the latest release. I was very impressed.
Overall layout and design for the main Apps UI remains stable and mostly unchanged |
The initial observation that came to mind was the difference in speed and response of the UI. It was faster, much faster in fact, with fast transitions between menus and launching of apps. The UI for the File Manager app had been streamlined and looked even sleeker and cleaner, with smaller but nicer icons. The OTA-9 release description had mentioned significant improvements to the Morph Browser and camera apps, but I haven't had a chance to test them yet. I will get into that in upcoming posts.
For now, development work goes on as things move on towards release of OTA-10. This is an exciting project and I'm proud to be participating in bringing about a more free, innovative, secure, privacy-focused and open source future.
