Kobo Aura One: Warranty Replacement Device - Initial System Setup and Test

Kobo Aura One Replacement, Serial #N709690026073
In my last post [1], I had described my woes with a brand new Kobo Aura One e-Reader. Barely 2 months into operation, it was severely malfunctioning with a frozen and corrupted display, a symptom of a deeper malaise within the onboard operating system or firmware.

Kobo's Customer Service was helpful in sending my case over to their Device Replacement Team, who sent me a replacement e-Reader and a mailing slip to send the defective device back. Yesterday night, I unboxed the replacement and charged it for the recommended 4 hours before initial setup. Today morning, I began the initial setup, and allowed it to sync over wifi.

I intend to run some initial tests over the next few days, beginning with one e-book for now - the same one I was previously reading on my former Aura One when it crashed. Hopefully, as things progress with various books, sync and updates I will not see a system malfunction as I did previously.

The replacement's initial system specs out of the box are as follows:
  • Serial Number: N709690026073
  • Software Version: 3.20.6894 (2483e14f7a, 6/28/16)
  • Model N709
  • FCC ID: NOIKBN709
  • IC: 8857A-KBN709
  • IFTEL: RCPKON716-1062
My defective Aura One was running version 4.1.7729 (8bedc76ce7, 10/10/16) of the firmware when it went into meltdown. I'm hoping that there's an update that's been released since then. Let's see how things go.

In an upcoming post, I intend to put down some of my thoughts on the challenges and pitfalls faced when building and rolling out new systems and products in the technical marketplace, and some ideas for mitigation.

See you on the next Engineering Excursion!
